Week 21 of 2011 - Classic Still Life

Rules, rules, rules: these are generally described as the sort of still life scenes typically found in paintings up through the rise of impressionism. The scenes may be a found or arranged still life. Subjects should typically be the sort of items and scenes one would find prior to the modern era. Ie. no electronics etc. The scenes should be lit by natural light, candle light, or at least look natural in their lighting. That is to say not looking like it was shot in a light box sans background, not backlit, etc. etc. etc.

Wasn't really feeling this week's theme until the sun FINALLY came out and I noticed the lilacs were blooming.

This geranium cutting was also the subject of my Week 05 of 2011 for the subject Water. Cut from a plant on my front porch in the fall of 2010 and after spending the winter rooting in a shot glass of water it was finally potted and has bloomed. Next step: outdoors for the summer!

National Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic Church.

I pass this architecture quite often while driving on Woodward Avenue but today the blue sky, fluffly white clouds and green green grass just beaconed for a photo opp. (And I just happened to have my camera!) An example of the zig-zag art deco style, it was completed in two stages, from 1931 to 1936. Click here for an original photo from the past.

High Key Phoptography: unnaturally bright lighting to blow out most or all harsh shadows in an image. Here is a Klondike Azalea bud from the back yard that I've been trying to force bloom in my bay window. It's going on 42 days now. The bud in the back is ready, but has been ready for a week. COME ON!

Note: this is my first pic that required the use of bubble wrap, painter's tape and a 250 watt shop light.

This is what I had planned on posting for last week's theme but wasn't all that pleased with the look of this pic taken from my car window while exiting from I-94 onto I-75 here in the D with my little Canon Powershot. I tried again another day on the way home from work with the Canon Rebel DSLR but not so easy while driving, and the shoulders have so much garbage on them I was afraid I would get a flat if I pulled over.

This piece of coral from a Caribbean trip has been sitting on my dining room table for quite some time now. It's from the island of Nevis from the spring of 2010. Today I discovered its texture while using my macro extender lens.

I went outside a few weekends ago and could see grass and dirt and earth so I screamed "goodbye snow" and of course it snowed another 5 inches that night. This time I will not scream it but blog it since I do not think Mother Nature follows my blog. But she should.

The snow is mostly gone now and it kind of amazes me that in my garden the strawberries (top of pic) and lettuce (bottom of pic) are still green and alive.

I bought an accessory for my camera from Photojojo.com and it arrived with a small centrosaurus in the package!

I also recently bought a lens extension tube to take macros with my current zoom lens.

It was like Photojojo knew I needed a subject to photograph.

Today's project fun: new sump pump! Even in winter the sump pump can fail. By fail I mean would not shut off and then when I unplugged it, it wouldn't come back on! So impromptu project day!

Loads of fun... until the power cord was 7 1/2 inches too short!

My Jan. 1st involves making Rugelah for a friend's annual party. No, I'm not Jewish. No, I'm not a baker. No, I'm not sure how I got involved with this tradition.

I just joined Flickr! I had a personal "issue" with Yahoo! in the past and cancelled my accounts. Moved it all to Google. Refused to rejoin. Blah blah blah. I guess my private protest did nothing to Yahoo!'s bottom line. SO today I tried to look at a picture and it sent me to Flickr. Before I hit the big red X to close the web page I noticed this statement: "Sign in with Google." SO I signed in with Google and it automatically made me a Yahoo! account. Thanks. Now I cannot blame myself for crossing my own picket line.

Now I can maybe join the 52 of 2011 Flickr group and show my weekly photos to the WORLD!

There was no parade.

There was no day off work and school.

Hell, I even forgot about it and posted this two days later. Doesn't ANYONE care?

In case you haven't been paying attention:

11/22/2008 - blog begins with a posting EVERYDAY (Something to say)
and soon after I became (happily) unemployed.

11/22/2009 - not much to say everyday anymore so blog goes into sporadic limbo.

1/1/2010 - blog turns into a photo a week project!

10/2010 - I get off my lazy butt and go back to 9-5 work.

11/22/2010 - 2 year celebration with a new, smaller camera arriving in the mail.

Sorry G9, but you can be just a bit bulky at times.

More later on why I bought a smaller point and shoot and not a kick-ass DSLR like an inspiring master photographer like myslef should have. Stay tuned!

This first pic was taken on the morning of October 17, 2010 of a local urban intersection down the street from where I live as part of my collage for the theme "My Day."

4 weeks later the same intersection shows the urban renewal taking place here. Once a grocery store but soon a movie and bowling megaplex complete with overpriced cocktails!
