Sweets Day

Now THAT would be a holiday!
I guess it would be the same as Halloween tho.
.
But this "Sweetest Day" that is celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes region and parts of the Northeast is:.

.
Sorry... not a holiday here at This is Eric's Blog.

Casual Friday

An American and Canadian custom which has spread to other parts of the world where some offices celebrate by allowing workers to wear more casual dress.
Fun!
(Whatever.)

.
I prefer underwear only Fridays.

Kitchens and projects 3

Yesterday's "project" post reminded me I didn't finish the
KITCHEN PROJECT postings from back in July.
I'm SURE someone has been wondering. Anyone? Anyone?
.
6-spray all doors and drawers with STONE.
This is the "final process" mentioned in an earlier post that will hide 60 years of wear and tear on the surfaces.
.
7-paint the edges with dark glossy gray.
Just because I need a step 7. AND it looks cool too.

2 1/2 inches

PROJECT FUN!
Last weekend I took on another home project.
What could be better then a little home project?
Like installing a well overdue new garage door opener!
Hours of fun... until the power cord was 2 1/2 inches too short!
Where's my electrician?
Don't worry! By the time I decided to post about this project I had moved the plug box so all is powered up and running great!

Autumn evergreen

I came across an evergreen in full fall colors today:

Evergreen: having foliage that persists and remains green throughout the year.

The New World - Give Thanks

Today in 1492 the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus arrives in the Americas making today Columbus Day. No mail. No banks.

Today across the border in Canada it's Thanksgiving. The Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest and don't seem to have any Pilgrims involved. But is there pie?

Two holidays - One day.

Living dead day

Today the dead live again... and it's NOT EVEN Halloween!
.
This is because today is World Zombie Day!
.
In celebration there was a Zombie Walk in my hood.

Hello Kitty

No associates for today, just the yang to the Daisy yin.
Kitty was a cat:

Here she is back in 1982.

Just a Thursday

What's there to say about a Thursday?
?
?
Searching for a meaning to it all I find:

"This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays."

If it makes you happy.

A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy?
(Albert Einstein)

If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad.
(Sheryl Crow)

Where else but This is Eric's Blog
can you find complementing quotes from Einstein & Crow?

Lots of green

19 to be exact.
The last of Homely Homer before he goes into the compost bin.
.
What to do. What to do. Sure you can fry them (like the movie name) but I have already done that a few times this summer. You can also pickle them (like my sun tea jar pickles) but I tried that already this summer. They seem to not be bad in a stir fry either. But do they have the same nutritional value as a ripe red tomato?
.
What else? How about Trick or Treats?
Poke a stick in them and cover with caramel?
Yumm!

It's too soon for this!

Ran up to a local home stuff store to find THIS just inside the door.
Did I sleep through fall? Did I miss Halloween and Thanksgiving? Is it already Tis the Season?
.
NO, IT ISN'T!

Question: is this a blurry cell phone pic OR are you just dizzy from seeing Xmas decor in the beginning of October?

Harvest moon night

The harvest moon is:.
the first full moon on or after the autumnal equinox
and signifying the end of the growing season.

That'll be tonight...

Get ready for pumpkin

October = Pumpkin everything.
.
Already had pumpkin waffles and pumpkin pancakes. What else is to come? pumpkin pie (or is that a November thing), pumpkin bars, pumpkin custard, pumpkin beer (no thanks - made that mistake once), pumpkin chocolate-chip cookies, pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin doughnuts, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin...
.
UPDATE 10/6: pumpkin butter (no fat and a ton of sugar)

Good Tips

Last night Alton Brown (American food personality, cinematographer, author, actor, and all around funny guy) spoke to a sold out crowd on the campus of Oakland University.

His final bit of wisdom is shown is this crummy cell phone pic:

I personally would save the good beer until everyone left!

My Last day of September horoscope

Vague and undefined fears may make you tense and anxious today.
TODAY? JUST TODAY???

Don't feel scared for unknown reasons and try not to take unnecessary tensions upon yourself.
OKAY! THANKS FOR THE TIP!!! I'LL TRY!

After all, at this time there is probably no foundation for them.
JUST THIS TIME? JUST TODAY???

Autumn, is that you?

Two days cold and rainy.
That means autumn is really here.
The trees are still green.
Someone needs to tell the trees it's time.
Don't make me do it. Please.

Light thru the looking glass

I read an article on refractographs (photos of light reflections) so I tried a quickie. I actually tried two. The second one (that I will not show) is just as amazing!
.
Kind of crappy and/or boring but so much for a first try. Oh, and the light isn't thru a looking glass but a cocktail glass. Maybe (just maybe) there will be more to come.

Patriot Birthday Day

Today in 1722 Samuel Adams was born in Boston, Massachusetts. An American revolutionary patriot, statesman and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

The biggest gainer

More garden posts: so I planted this thing called pineapple sage (click for post) back in May (or was it April?) and although it doesn't taste like sage and didn't sprout any pineapples it did win the biggest grower award. That's a lot of something I don't know what to do with. What kind of cocktail can you make out of pineapple sage?

My own private Idaho

It was spud harvest day today and I found that your spuds should be sown earlier than Memorial Day-ish. They sprouted near the end of June (click for post) and were in full green growth by the end of July (click for post). But today I found the spuds were sparse.
Still YUMMY though.

What happened to Tuesday?

All day I thought it was Tuesday. But it's not. It seems to already be Wednesday. What happened to Tuesday? Now looking at my posts I see one from said Tuesday. Now I remember it. I remember it was the beginning of fall. That's probably why I blocked it out of my memory. That or the bottle of wine I drank last night. Mmm... cheap cabernet... nothing better than that to celebrate the start of autumn. I suppose I should have celebrated with an Octoberfest brew BUT I didn't!

Autumnal Equinox

5:18 P.M.
Marking the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

The sun crosses the equator.
The ecliptic and the celestial equators intersect.
The day and night are approximately equal length.

.
NOW it's time for Octoberfest!
Bring on the autumn beers!

Did you say Dinosaur?

In a search for more dinosaurs around town
I came across Dinosaur Hill
during my bike ride along the Paint Creek Trail.
.
Further investigation of the "Hill" did not produce any dinosaurs.
.
I did however encounter what at first I thought was a young tyrannosaurus that jumped out of the brush right in front of my bike but turned out to be just a deer.

Clinton River

The Clinton River Trail. Another biking experience of almost 10 miles in one direction. What happened to the loop concept?

This trail didn't have an archery range ten feet from the path BUT it did have a prehistoric beast along the way!

AND ONLY IN MICHIGAN would you come across this:

Paint Creek

Back once again to the park of yesterday's post but this time to ride the Paint Creek Trail. It's advertised as 8.9 miles. But THEN you have to turn around and ride 8.9 miles again back to your car.
17.8 total miles and only road through one pile of dog crap!

Still no fall colors (since fall isn't for 8 more days!)

Stay on trailway! Keep head down!

To swim or not to swim.

Back about 3 1/2 weeks ago I took this picture in a local park thinking it was a bit funny that you could drown as depicted here in this raging river of about 1 1/2 feet of water. I understand that one can technically drown in just an inch of water (or something like that) but this river is so shallow that I found a bit (teeny-tiny-bit) of humor in the sign of the stick man with water up to his armpits. SAFETY FIRST IN THE SUBURBAN PARK!!!

TODAY I returned to the park of the drowning sign to find not a stick man but the second largest art festival in the state. The 44th annual Arts & Apples Festival. This is my second annual visit. Also my second visit total. But I took no pics and I saw no apples. You would think there would have been apples everywhere!

Wither starts

Rudbeckia hirta starts to dry and shrivel as if it's the start of the autumn season.
.
Or just in need of some water since it's been summer like warm still.
.
Probably a little of both?
.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.
And it's
Patriot Day!
.
I knew it was 9/11 but I didn't realize it had a new name. Is the name new or is This is Eric's Blog just behind on the times? They kind of sneaked a new celebration in on me and I almost missed it. Sorry! But Google missed it too so THERE!
.
As I look further I see the day was designated as a holiday in December 2001 by that last Republican President. I must have blocked out those eight years.
Cute with Eric too
No more Michigan State Fair pictures is what I told myself after yesterday's post. I figured three days was enough. On to different things I told myself. But I forgot that I had sent a synchronized sleeping pigs pic to Chris Leavins who publishes the infamous blog Cute with Chris, exploring the ugly side of cute, for the synchronized sleeping category. Either my brilliant pic of pigs sleeping side by side or my sad sad story of the Michigan State Fair coming to an end caught his attention.
No cats? How about Fair Animals
Today is 9/9/09 - so here are 9 things:
.
1 - Is there any significance, really? It's just another day here at This is Eric's Blog. Some say the world will come to an end today. I better hurry up and post this just in case!
.
2 - Since cats are known to have 9 lives (and today being 9/9/09) it has been declared "A Day Without Cats Online." I wonder if it's only today or every 9/9 regardless of year.
.
3 - On this day in 1850 (NOT a 9/9/09) California became the 31st state.
.
4 - Update: I'm done wondering about #2 since I never post pics of cats anyway. Well except for the zoo pics and those are big cats.
.
5 - Today is the last repeating single digit date until 1/1/11. (Do not confuse it with 10/10/10... which I think I like a lot.)
.
6 - There used to be 9 planets in our solar system. Sorry Pluto.
.
7 - Two weeks until fall, or Autumn as some call it.
.
8 - I forget what eight was for.
.
9 - Here is a collage of State Fair Animals due to the no cats rule:
All State Fair pictures from the last three days were taken with an ever-more-portable Sony Cybershot P200 that fits in a pocket.
